The oyster shells have a stabilizing effect on the KH value and therefore on the pH value.

KH indicates the carbonate hardness of the water.

 Plants, fish and biological filtration "consume" carbonate and inexorably, the value of KH decreases: resulting in rapid pH changes and amplitude can be significant. Important enough to induce stress to the Koi.

A low KH also decreases the efficiency of biological filtration.

After winter, or during rainy periods, the water in the basin is diluted with non-mineralized water, which causes a drop in KH.
